Dear [salutation],
Every year, college students seek internships with our office to assist with constituent services, learn about the legislative process, earn college credit, and gain experience. This year, we asked District Office intern Gabriel Hinrichs to share his thoughts on his experience:
When I landed an internship at Don Bacon’s congressional office, I was feeling two emotions.... happy that I finally got an internship but also uncertain about how I’d enjoy the office. As a left-leaning registered Democrat, I was worried about becoming overwhelmed with partisan garbage and becoming resentful.
My impressions beforehand were that I would have to listen to people scream at me over the phone. I was surprised on my first day when walking in, to learn about the services the office had available for constituents. Receiving calls about someone needing help with their taxes was far more welcoming compared to, “I hate you.”
Helping veterans, social security recipients, immigrants, taxpayers, etc., gave me a sense of importance. I had the ability to truly help someone just by getting them connected with one of the many staff members. Immigrants calling and asking to speak with Scott or people calling a week before they travel to Europe to ask for a passport (it happens too often…)
Public service has been certified for what I want to do with my career thanks to this internship. The pride gained from improving other people’s lives is great. Being selfless has always made me happier.
I had people within my family and friends ask me before the internship began, “doesn’t this go against everything you believe in?” And yeah, it sort of does. But the issues that I worry about were shelved in my hours at the office as much as possible because the mission of the office was that constituents needed help and we had to help them.
My final day has arrived. I’ve made my last news clips for the office and listened to my final voicemails. Just know, Rep. Bacon’s office is here to serve you. There’s a reason why they continue to win service awards. You may or may not agree with the congressman at all but just know, the office is here for you, and believe it or not, they do actually care about this community.
Specific thanks go to District Director James Wright for helping me get the internship. Other thanks go to all of the other interns I worked with.
Sincerely,
Gabriel Hinrichs
