Dear [salutation],
On this Mother’s Day, we remember and thank all our mothers who have not only invested much in our lives, but who have gone above and beyond to make our country great and raise the next generation of parents and leaders. The importance of motherhood to our society and communities is something we cannot overstate. We honor our moms and seek ways to better support them. I think of Abraham Lincoln who said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Lincoln spoke for all of us.
The History of Women, and Mothers Helping Aid the United States
All throughout American history, mothers have been on the front lines as well as behind the scenes of pivotal decision making as well as important movements. Mothers like Harriet Jacobs, a woman who escaped slavery to publish a novel listing the atrocities of enslavement, and Betty Friedan, who led the Women’s Strike for Equality, have been catalysts for change in American history.
Since the founding of our country, women and mothers have been there, whether they went unnoticed or not, to act when they saw injustice. We have had recent legislation that I supported.
Protecting American Mothers with Legislation
I cosponsored H.R. 3110, the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act, which aims to expand workplace protections for employees needing to find a private place to feed their children while they are at work or in a public setting. This legislation passed the House with a vote of 276 to 149.
I have also cosponsored H.R. 5163, the Care for Her Act. This bill allows eligible taxpayers to claim the Child Tax Credit for the tax year preceding the year their child is born. This legislation is vital in relieving financial burdens and is essential in supporting parents and pregnant women.
Today, and every day, we thank and celebrate mothers and expecting mothers for being powerful citizens in our society. Without them, our community would not be where it is today.
