REP. BACON CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2020
Washington,
December 24, 2020
Omaha, Neb. – Today, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) issued the following statement in observance of Christmas Day: “Merry Christmas! It is true what they say—it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Time to celebrate with family, friends, and loved ones. However, this year will look different than most. The coronavirus has turned our nation upside down, and along the way, we’ve lost many friends and family, and my heart hurts for those who have suffered. On top of that, we’ve not been able to go visit some in our families, and many are lonely. “That is why, this year, it is my hope that we keep the faith to move forward through these times of distress, and to remember the true meaning and gift of Christmas. “One of my favorite things about the holiday season is seeing how excited children get; especially on Christmas morning. They just can’t wait to open the many presents under the tree. I remember one early Christmas morning around 6:00 a.m., while Angie and I tried to sleep peacefully, I heard my children wide awake, tearing into the wrapping paper a few rooms away. They told us they just couldn’t wait any longer! “Of course, I was no different at their age. I remember peeking through the stairwell as my mom wrapped presents until the early morning hours. I miss those Christmases 50 years ago when we would open presents in the morning, then one set of grandparents would visit and we’d open more presents, and then we would go to our other grandparents’ house and open even more. “Like many families, we also enjoyed our classic Christmas dinner where the warm side dishes, ham, and turkey scents filled the entire house. Even today, Angie and I, grandparents to six little ones, enjoy cooking the big feast, just like my parents did. I will cherish these memories forever. “This year, however, will not be like the rest. There may not be a large crowd gathered, many presents under the tree, or a large feast prepared, but there will be the Christmas spirit and lots of love. “With all of the celebrations, it is easy to forget that the true gift of Christmas was not purchased from a store. It was a person. God loves us so much that He sent His son Jesus Christ to be the best gift we could ever receive. He was love and life all in one. Despite the trials, tribulations, and journey to Bethlehem nearly 2,000 years ago, Mary and Joseph were a on quest to bring Salvation to this world, and that is what we honor on Christmas. My favorite Christmas carol is “O Holy Night” and I love the special words, “The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend.” “So, whether you’re gathering with a small, intimate group, or meeting virtually, it is my hope that you create new memories of smiles and excitement for years to come. “As always, I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and faith-filled Christmas. May God Bless you all.” ### |
