Congressman Bacon’s Statement on Executive Order Regarding Refugees

Today, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-2) released the following statement:

“America is a country of hope and refuge for those fleeing terrorism, persecution, war and poverty. However, we must review our vetting procedures to ensure we are protecting our citizens as it is our first priority. There are multiple reports that indicate ISIS is trying to infiltrate other countries using refugees as cover. Consequently, we should ensure the safety of Americans in the most humane way possible and accommodate those refugees who are approved and in our country, or are trying to return here to their homes. We should also work to build refugee safe havens that are close to their countries of origin, so that people eventually have the freedom to choose to return to their homes.

This temporary 120 day order does allow for travel exceptions that can be approved by DHS. Once our new Secretary of Homeland Security has conducted a comprehensive review of our vetting procedures, I am confident that he will recommend an approach to the President that protects our citizens while preserving the values we treasure as Americans. As things move forward, I will closely monitor the actions of the administration and will act accordingly as your representative.”
