This week, Representative Don Bacon (NE-02) joined 15 other members of Congress who have served in combat to ask President Donald Trump for special exemption consideration for two groups of refugees with regard to his Executive Order concerning refugees. The letter was delivered to the President this week.

The letter expresses a shared concern of national security and the need for the executive order while seeking refinement of the policy for those in greatest danger and of least risk to America’s security.

“The first group includes individuals who sacrifice everything to assist the United States and our allies in combat, going as far as risking their lives for our safety,” said Rep. Bacon. “They and their families are often hunted, by our common enemies who seek retribution for their support of coalition actions. For their sacrifices, we owe them a path to safety.

These faithful partners include interpreters, people providing information, political and business leaders ousted from their positions and others. They are often deprived of their property, exiled, tortured, or assassinated and many times also includes their family members.

The second group includes refugee children who require life-saving care of America’s physicians and hospitals. These children and their families are coming from areas that suffer from a lack of highly qualified medical care and facilities.

“We are a nation of compassion and need to establish an exemption for these children and their families,” added Rep. Bacon. “As a father and grandfather, I cannot even begin to imagine the desperation some of these families feel when trying to get the best medical care for their children.”
