Bacon Votes to Control Ballooning Debt

Washington. – Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) issued the following statement after voting for Speaker McCarthy’s debt ceiling legislation:

“The passage of this bill puts the ball in the President’s and Schumer’s court to start negotiating. Their stance of refusing to negotiate is being criticized by a large majority of Americans because it is not right. In divided government, we must negotiate in good faith for the good of the country. In the end, we know we must raise the debt ceiling and also curb the reckless spending we’ve seen in recent years. By 2040 our nation will have a debt to GDP ratio of 200 percent that puts us in a fiscal house of cards. Business as usual is unacceptable. There have been partisan criticisms raised about cuts to certain programs but let me be clear, this bill places a cap on discretionary spending at the fiscal year 2022 levels with small increases allowed each year for 10 years. This is not draconian, but common sense when we’re facing a debt crisis. I love our country and want to preserve our financial future and economic stability.”
