Every March, we celebrate American women and their contributions to our country’s history. Yesterday, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) commemorated Women’s History Month on the House Floor by honoring Sara Woods of Omaha, for her contributions to our community as an educator, volunteer and leader.

In the same vein, as notable Nebraska women such as Kay Orr, Susette "Bright Eyes" La Flesche Tibbles, Willa Cather, and Mari Sandoz; Mrs. Woods has lived a life of service and inspiration impacting the community with her dedication. Throughout her educational career she has encouraged her students to be engaged learners, supporting and challenging them.

“Sara’s passion for volunteerism led to her crucial involvement in the creation of numerous service organizations whose purpose is to equip, train and encourage young men and women to serve their communities,” said Congressman Bacon. “We would all do well to adopt her inspiring passion for public service.”

In addition to serving on the boards of several non-profit organizations in Omaha for youth, women and the homeless, Sara oversees the operation of the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She was involved in the creation and development of this institute, which houses the campus’s student community leadership activities and provides collaborative office space for dozens of community organizations.

In recognition of her service she received the University of Nebraska at Omaha Chancellor’s Award in 2005, and both the “Distinguished Alumni Award” and YWCA “Woman of Distinction” Award in 2009.

On March 20, Congressman Bacon will present her with a ceremonial copy of the Congressional Record at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
