Rep. Bacon Votes to Affirm FTC’s Privacy Rules ProcessFCC’s Rules Did Not Provide Additional Protection; Only Confusion
Washington, DC,
March 29, 2017
Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) issued the following statement in regards to his vote on S.J. Res 34, pertaining to the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) rules regarding Internet Service Providers (ISP) and the broader internet: “This resolution does not reduce existing consumer privacy protections. Those protections are already afforded to consumers through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and their enforcement-based approach to privacy regulation. The FCC’s rules created unnecessary redundancy, conflicting language, and confusion. They treated ISP’s such as Cox, Century Link, Verizon and others differently from the broader internet including informational and consumer based platforms such as Facebook and Amazon. Furthermore, the rules did not improve privacy protections that the FTC has ensured since the birth of the internet. This CRA restores the same case-by-case process that has allowed the internet to innovate and thrive all along. Both the FTC and the FCC will retain authority over consumer privacy on a case-by-case basis. The FTC framework has worked successfully for decades and the FCC’s decision has abandoned this successful bipartisan framework.” ### |
