Nebraskan Joins Rep. Bacon at Capitol to Recognize Foster Care Month

Speaking on the House floor in recognition of National Foster Care Month, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) highlighted the challenges facing youth in state care and praised a young Nebraskan who joined him in Washington today for the remarkable works she is doing to improve the lives of foster youth after growing up in the system. Bacon’s guest in the US Capitol, Kimberly Grosse, spent a portion of the day with him as part of Foster Youth Shadow Day, organized by the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth. As a member of the Caucus, Bacon gave Ms. Grosse insight into his routine and spoke with her about her aspirations and interest in foster care policy. “The success of our country’s future depends upon the well-being of our kids today. We have the duty as a Nation to empower every child so they have the same sense of promise and possibility as any other youth regardless of their circumstances,” said Bacon in his remarks on the House Floor. “I was pleased to be paired with Kimberly - a young individual who is a shining example of what determination and perseverance in all aspects of her life.” Kimberly spent 8 years in the foster care system, starting in a group home called Kids Cottage and later placed in Boys Town where she graduated high school. She currently works as a Communications Specialist for Air Methods Corporation, dispatching medical EMS helicopters. After outlining Kimberly’s accomplishments, including volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, Bacon expressed his appreciation to his colleagues on the Congressional Foster Youth Caucus and encouraged the embracement of spirit that every child matters and committed to working towards providing all our sons and daughters an equal opportunity to lead productive and fulfilling lives. |
