Rep. Bacon Issues D-Day Statement
Washington, DC,
June 6, 2017
Today, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) released the following statement in regards to the 73rd anniversary of D-Day: “Today marks the 73rd anniversary of one of the most important battles of World War II. Known by many names: The Battle of Normandy, The Longest Day, Operation Overlord and D-Day, this operation led to the liberation of France and ultimately the end of the war. If not for the cooperation between the United States, Britain, Canada and other nations in this massive combined land, sea and air operation, our world may look significantly different today. As President Dwight Eisenhower said, ‘Despite the losses and suffering involved in that human effort, and in the epic conflict of which it was a part, we today find in those experiences reasons for hope and inspiration. They remind us particularly of the accomplishments attainable through close cooperation and friendship among free peoples striving toward a common goal.’ We should take these words from President Eisenhower to heart during these times and ask ourselves, ‘How can we cooperate with our friends and allies to rid our world of the cowardly terrorists whose mantra is to strike fear into the hearts of the innocent?’ We must stand united now more than ever. Just as we did 73 years ago today.” |
