“I Still Have a Dream”Congressman Don Bacon Issues Martin Luther King Day Statement
Washington, DC,
January 15, 2018
OMAHA-NE - Today, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) released the following statement for Martin Luther King Jr. Day: “A true American leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. showed tremendous courage to help our country grow and advance. He faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles amid the struggle to improve the lives of generations of Americans to come. Dr. King said, ‘I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream.’ Today, these words still have profound meaning. We all still have a dream. We must transcend partisan bickering and develop real policies that improve education and training opportunities; create jobs through infrastructure; encourage small business growth and development; and reform immigration. My dream is more than just legislative. Our dream must be successful in our neighborhoods, businesses and schools. Our dream must be a nation where a child in any neighborhood lives in safety, pursuing a future that best prepares them for the unlimited possibilities, which is the promise of America and the essence of Dr. King’s dream. We want a society where we are not judged by the content of our skin, but by the content of our character. We want a society where anyone can achieve their dreams and improve the condition of their lives. Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero. Many of our servicemen and servicewomen sacrificed their lives in defense of our freedoms and security. Dr. King sacrificed his life helping America live up to its vision that "all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Like Dr. King, we must fight for this dream in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment. We should still have that dream and continue fighting for it.” ### |
