Bacon Announces Kick-Off for Congressional App Challenge

OMAHA, NE- The Congressional App Challenge, a nationwide competition designed to engage students in coding and problem-solving processes, is accepting registrations until September 10th. Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) will host a Kick-Off event on August 3 to help students get started.

“This challenge encourages middle and high school students to engage in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields,” said Rep. Bacon. “Some estimates show there are nearly a quarter of a million unfilled programming jobs in the U.S. and initiatives such as this help spur an interest in STEM studies that a student may not have had.”

The Congressional App Challenge is open to all middle and high school students living in or attending school in Nebraska’s Second Congressional District. Participating students will develop a unique software application, or “app”, for mobile, tablet, web, or any other computer-based platform. Winners are invited to attend a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C., and possibly receive prizes.

Students who wish to enter the competition must submit their app online by October 15, and include with it a YouTube or VIMEO clip demonstrating and explaining their app and what they learned through the development process.

For more information and to register, visit https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/ and then indicate your Member of Congress on the registration form provided. Registrations must be received by September 10.

Students and teachers in the Second District can also RVSP for our App Challenge Kick-Off on August 3rd at the AIM Institute on 1905 Harney Street. Sign up at NE02AppChallenge.eventbrite.com, and use the password “CAC2018”.

“I’m excited to see what students create, and hear about how they come up with their own unique solutions as they explore STEM fields,” said Rep. Bacon.
