OMAHA, NE - Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) released the following statement regarding the President's National emergency Declaration: "The use of a national emergency raises significant concerns as it encroaches on Article I of our Constitution. This act yields the President a wide swath of power, and has been used by previous administrations in the same situations – when Congress has failed to do it’s job. The embarrassingly anemic compromise Speaker Pelosi offered, and that Congress agreed to, reflects the inability of Congress to work together and give border security it’s due justice. “The budget bill we voted for yesterday didn’t provide for even a quarter of what was asked for by US Border Patrol for border security, and Speaker Pelosi should not be playing political games with our national security. I have voted for real comprehensive immigration reform including border security multiple times. "I’m also concerned that the money taken from the Department of Defense could hurt our military readiness; something I have fought hard for. This is of great concern to me as we do not know what areas of operations will be impacted." |
