Bacon Questions Pelosi’s Reasoning for War Powers Resolution

Omaha, Neb.- Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02), the highest-ranking retired active duty military member serving in Congress, today questioned Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s rationale for introducing a “War Powers” resolution.

“Speaker Pelosi says the Soleimani operation was ‘disproportionate’,” said Rep. Bacon. “What would it take for her to defend our troops? He oversaw the murder of 608 Americans in Iraq and recently directed rocket attacks on US bases, which killed another American and then attacked our embassy. How many more Americans would have to be killed for this to be proportionate? Or, is this just more hyper-partisanship that weakens us while we confront Iranian terrorism? It was right for the President to defend America.”

Rep. Bacon served nearly thirty years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Brigadier General, where he specialized in electronic warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. He deployed to Baghdad in 2007-2008 where he was on the receiving end of Iranian-built missiles on a daily basis. During other assignments he commanded airmen who targeted Iranian built roadside bombs used by Iranian led proxies to target US service members. During his career, he was deployed four times in the Middle East.

“I lost a good friend and fellow service-member to the Quds Force commanded by Soleimani,” said Rep. Bacon. “The loss of one life at the hands of this terrorist is more than enough, let alone 608.”
