Omaha, Neb. – Congressman Don Bacon issued the following statement after President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty in six months, if Russia did not return to full compliance:
“Though some of the oldest aircraft in the Air Force inventory, the two OC-135s based at Offutt Air Force Base continue to play an important role in this international treaty. The President is right to insist that Russia uphold its obligations and return to compliance but I believe this treaty is worth saving. Open Skies observation flights provide direct access to Russian airfields and airspace, help us build trust and confidence with our allies, and ensure we are notified in advance when Russia overflies our forces in Europe. I urge Russia to return to full compliance under the treaty so we may all enjoy the strategic stability it provides.”
