Bacon Joins Citizens and Colleagues in Proxy Vote Lawsuit

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) today informed Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy that he wished to be included in the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Democrat rule on proxy voting, H.Res. 965, and committed to not use it or cast a vote on another Member’s behalf:

“I will not give our district’s “vote card” to another member of Congress. For over 231 years, the House of Representatives has physically conducted business and never allowed a Member to vote by proxy. We are elected to conduct business and vote on behalf of our constituents, not to have another member vote on behalf of the district. Our district’s “vote card” belongs to the Member that was elected. This sham method of representation could lead to more legislation being rushed to the floor without having to go through the Committee process where many of our differences are ironed out. It also lends itself to abuse where the leadership of the majority power further centralizes power. To some of my colleagues, this is merely an opportunity to play hooky as evidenced by a couple of Members who claimed they could not physically come to Washington D.C. and gave their proxy votes away because of the ‘ongoing public health emergency’, but they were able to attend the scheduled SpaceX launch. I stand with the American people by joining this lawsuit.”
