Bacon Votes to Send FISA Bill to Conference
Cites Need for Safeguards

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) voted today to send the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act to Conference, the process where House and Senate Members work together to iron out differences between bills:

“I voted to send the FISA bill to Conference so that the House and Senate Conferees can reconcile differences and find an effective compromise. We need a FISA program for national security so that we can track threats that are attacks on our nation, but we also must ensure safeguards are in place to protect our citizens from abuses and unlawful monitoring. The Department of Justice communicated serious reservations on the Senate bill.

“We also must come to resolution on the abuses that occurred during the last Administration. We know now from recently released documents that officials in the previous Administration weaponized the FISA program for political gains and there needs to be accountability. It does no good to have FISA safeguards in place when individuals intentionally submit misleading data and when pertinent information is purposefully left out. Abuse of FISA cannot be tolerated. If a Presidential nominee can be wrongfully targeted, so can anyone. The FISA mess in DOJ and FBI must be cleaned up."
