REP. BACON’S MLK JR. DAY STATEMENT

Omaha, Neb. – Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) today released a statement regarding Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which will be celebrated on January 18, 2021: “Today we remember and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream for America. His dream that we will one day live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. It still rings true today. Dr. King dedicated his life to helping others and working with people of all races and backgrounds. In the face of adversity and hate, he stood tall. Now it is our turn. “To honor his legacy, we must not only talk about his vision for America, but to live it by fighting for opportunity and equality for all. We must embrace compassion and reject prejudice so that the next generation will never forget his principles and sacrifices and will carry on his mission. I will continue to fight for change by once again introducing anti-lynching legislation which will establish a new criminal civil rights violation for lynching, supporting grant funding for law enforcement training and community policing, and looking for ways to grow and support minority business opportunities. “The Declaration of Independence states, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ “Let us honor Dr. King not just today, but every day, and strive to bring civility, compassion, and acceptance back into our country.” ### |
