Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) is now accepting applications for nomination to one of the United States military academies: U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY; U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) at Colorado Springs, CO; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT does not require a congressional nomination. “The academies provide education and training to prepare young Americans to become leaders of great character in the Armed Forces,” said Rep. Bacon. “I served nearly thirty years in the Air Force, a time I will always treasure because I got to serve with great Americans defending our precious freedoms.” In order to qualify for consideration, applicants must be at least 17 years of age, but not yet 22 years of age; a citizen of the United States; not be married, pregnant or have a legal obligation to support a child; be a resident of the Second Congressional District of Nebraska; and must meet the medical, physical and academic requirements of the Academy. Those selected to attend a service academy, must commit to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
