Bacon Calls Out Putin, Russian Aggression Against Ukraine

Omaha, Neb. - Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02), a retired Brigadier General and member of the House Armed Services Committee today called out Vladimir Putin and the Russian government for their aggression against Ukraine:

“This Russian naked aggression against Ukraine is despicable and the free world condemns Russia and its dictator Putin. The attack is unprovoked and a war of choice, not necessity. Today starts a new and dark chapter in national security that is Hobbesian in nature where bullies will dominate weaker countries. Where might makes right, and dictators prey on their neighbors unless free nations band together and deter this threat.

“America is the leader of the free world and indispensable to the defense of human dignity, liberty and rule of law. We cannot do it on our own though, and we need to build strong alliances with nations that share our values. If we don’t, we will eventually find ourselves isolated in a more dangerous world. Russia is now a pariah state and should be shut out of diplomatic and economic relations with the free world. Further, NATO and our Allies in the Far East must take the threat seriously, and significantly strengthen their defense capabilities. We have entered a new Cold War that could easily escalate if we do not take the Russian bully seriously.

“I call on President Biden and the United States to lead the immediate implementation of harsh economic sanctions on the Russian Federation, Mr. Putin and his associates, and the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline.”

Rep. Bacon served nearly 30 years in the Air Force, retiring as a Brigadier General. During his career in the Air Force, Congressman Bacon specialized in electronic warfare, intelligence and reconnaissance. His career highlights include two tours as a Wing Commander, at Ramstein Airbase in Germany and Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska; group command at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona; squadron command in Arizona, and expeditionary squadron command in Iraq. In total, Rep. Bacon served 16 assignments including four deployments in the Middle East to include Iraq in 2007 to 2008 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
